About Matt

Dr. Matt Burgess is a highly experienced genetic counsellor with over 20 years of expertise in the field. He has worked in some of Sydney and Melbourne’s most prestigious public hospitals and has extensive clinical experience spanning familial cancer, prenatal, neurogenetic, cardiac, adult, and pediatric genetic counselling.

Dr. Burgess holds a Doctor of Health Science degree, with his doctoral research focusing on parental attitudes toward gene therapy. His research was supervised by a faculty member from Harvard Medical School where he presented his doctoral defence.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Burgess is an Adjunct Professor at Bay Path University in Massachusetts, where he teaches in the Master’s in Genetic Counselling program. He has also taught in the genetic counselling program at Charles Sturt University and is currently a casual academic at Central Queensland University. Over the years, he has mentored numerous Master’s students during their clinical placements.

Dr. Burgess is a Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) and an active member of the Australasian Society of Genetic Counsellors. He currently serves on the HGSA’s Education, Ethics, and Social Issues Committee. His contributions extend globally as a life member of the Asia Pacific Society of Human Genetics and a founding member of the Professional Genetic Counselors Society in Asia.

An accomplished researcher, Dr. Burgess has published in several peer-reviewed journals (you can read his contributions here). He is also the host of the popular podcast Demystifying Genetics, which has garnered significant recognition for its engaging approach to genetic education.
