Cardiac Genetics
Understanding inherited heart conditions starts with your family history.
Rosalind Genetics provides counselling and testing for individuals and families affected by – or at risk of – genetic heart conditions. Our goal is to help you understand your risk and take steps to protect your health and the health of your loved ones.
Some heart conditions can run in families, even if no one has experienced symptoms.
Genetic heart conditions may increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest, abnormal rhythms, heart muscle changes, or structural abnormalities – sometimes without warning. Early diagnosis and proactive management can be life-saving.
If you or someone in your family has experienced unexplained fainting, heart rhythm issues, cardiomyopathy, or sudden cardiac death under age 40, a cardiac genetics assessment can help uncover whether an inherited condition is present.
Who is this service for?
You may benefit from cardiac genetic testing if:
You have a personal or family history of unexplained fainting, seizures, or cardiac arrest
A relative has passed away suddenly under age 40 (especially without a clear cause)
There’s a known familial condition such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or long QT syndrome
You’ve been diagnosed with a cardiomyopathy or arrhythmia disorder
A relative has received genetic testing that identified a cardiac-related gene change
Even if your symptoms are mild or you’re completely healthy, we can help assess whether testing is appropriate based on your family or personal history.
“I’d felt a few heart flutters, but never thought much of them. After a referral to Rosalind, I found out there was a genetic reason behind it. The counselling was so thorough and reassuring. Now I know what to watch for and how to manage it.”
– Amy, age 36

What can we test for?
We offer testing for a range of inherited cardiac conditions, including:
- Cardiomyopathies (e.g. hypertrophic, dilated, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy)
- Arrhythmia syndromes (e.g. long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome, catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia)
- Aortopathies and connective tissue disorders (e.g. Marfan syndrome)
- Sudden cardiac death-related mutations
- Predictive testing for family members when a gene change is known
Our genetic counsellors will help you understand the benefits, limitations, and possible outcomes of testing. The decision to proceed is always yours.
Medicare and costs
Some cardiac genetic tests are eligible for Medicare rebates, especially if clinical or family history criteria are met. We’ll let you know upfront if any out-of-pocket costs apply, and you’re never obligated to proceed with testing after consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral?
Yes. You’ll need a referral from a GP or specialist to access this genetic testing service.
Should I get tested even if I feel completely healthy?
Yes, if you have a person or family history that indicates risk. Some genetic heart conditions don’t show symptoms until later in life – or only show up during stress, exercise, or illness. Testing can help identify hidden risks.
What if a relative has already had testing?
We can review those results and may recommend predictive testing to see if you’ve inherited the same gene change.
Can children or teens be tested?
In some cases, yes – particularly if there’s a known gene change in the family. We’ll talk through the benefits and timing of testing based on age and clinical need.
How long do results take?
Most results are available in 3 to 6 weeks. Your counsellor will explain the expected timeline during your appointment.
What happens if I test positive?
We’ll guide you through the next steps, including screening recommendations, lifestyle considerations, and options for family testing. You’re not alone – we’re here to support you.
