Celebrating 12 Months of Rosalind Genetics: Dr Matt Burgess, Genetic Counsellor

Twelve months ago, Rosalind Genetics was founded with a clear purpose: to provide accessible, expert, and compassionate genetic counselling services grounded in clinical excellence and ethical practice. One year on, we are proud of how far we have come and of the growing number of individuals and families who now know Dr Matt Burgess, genetic counsellor, as a trusted voice in genomic healthcare.

Who Is Dr Matt Burgess?

Dr Matt Burgess is a highly experienced genetic counsellor with more than 20 years of expertise in clinical genetics. He has worked in some of Sydney and Melbourne’s most well-known public hospitals, supporting individuals and families through complex and often life-changing genetic information.

His clinical expertise spans:

  • Familial cancer genetics
  • Prenatal and reproductive genetics
  • Neurogenetics
  • Cardiac genetic conditions
  • Adult and paediatric genetic counselling

Dr Burgess holds a Doctor of Health Science degree, with doctoral research focused on parental attitudes toward gene therapy. His research was supervised by a faculty member from Harvard Medical School, where he presented his doctoral defence, a milestone that reflects both academic rigour and international collaboration.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr Matt Burgess is deeply committed to education. He serves as an Adjunct Professor at Bay Path University in Massachusetts, teaching in the Master’s in Genetic Counselling program. He has also taught at Charles Sturt University and currently contributes as a casual academic at Central Queensland University. Over the years, he has mentored numerous Master’s students during their clinical placements, helping shape the next generation of genetic counsellors.

Leadership in the Genetics Community

Dr Burgess is a Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) and an active member of the Australasian Society of Genetic Counsellors. He currently serves on the HGSA’s Education, Ethics, and Social Issues Committee, contributing to national conversations around best practice and ethical standards in genomic medicine.

His involvement extends globally. Dr Burgess is a life member of the Asia Pacific Society of Human Genetics and a founding member of the Professional Genetic Counselors Society in Asia. These roles reflect his commitment not only to Australian genetics, but to strengthening the profession across the Asia-Pacific region.

Research, Education, and Public Engagement

An accomplished researcher, Dr Matt Burgess has published in several peer-reviewed journals, contributing to discussions on gene therapy, ethics, and patient perspectives in genomics.

He is also the host of the podcast Demystifying Genetics, a widely recognised platform designed to make complex genetic topics understandable and engaging. Through this podcast, Matt continues to build public awareness and empower individuals to make informed decisions about genetic testing.
