Meet Dr Sondhya (Sondy) Ghedia: Clinical Geneticist and Chief Medical Officer at Rosalind Genetics 🧬

At Rosalind Genetics, we are proud to have Dr Sondhya (Sondy) Ghedia as our Chief Medical Officer. Sondy is a highly respected clinical geneticist whose career reflects a deep commitment to patient care, education, and advancing the practice of genomic medicine in Australia. With over a decade of experience supporting individuals and families across both public and private healthcare systems, she brings exceptional clinical expertise and compassionate leadership to our organisation.

A journey from regional New South Wales to clinical genetics

Sondy’s path into medicine began in regional New South Wales, where she developed an early interest in science and healthcare. She initially trained as a pharmacist, gaining valuable insight into therapeutics, patient care, and the broader healthcare system. Motivated to deepen her clinical impact, she went on to complete her medical degree at the University of Sydney.

Following graduation, Sondy undertook specialist training in paediatrics at Sydney Children’s Hospital. This experience fostered her interest in rare diseases and inherited conditions, ultimately leading her to pursue advanced training in clinical genetics. She completed her genetics training at two of Australia’s leading centres: the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital. These formative years shaped her expertise in diagnosing and managing genetic conditions across the lifespan.

Clinical expertise across paediatric and adult genetics

Since 2010, Sondy has provided expert care to both adult and paediatric patients with a wide range of genetic conditions. Her clinical approach is characterised by thorough assessment, thoughtful interpretation of complex genetic information, and a strong commitment to patient-centred care.

Sondy currently serves as the Clinical Lead of the Department of Clinical Genetics at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. This department is one of the few centres in Australia offering dedicated care for adults with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a complex genetic condition that requires specialised multidisciplinary management. Sondy has extensive expertise in NF1 and is widely recognised for her contributions to improving care for individuals living with this condition.

Her broader clinical interests include general clinical genetics, preconception carrier screening, and the coordination and interpretation of complex genetic testing. In an era where genetic testing is becoming increasingly sophisticated, Sondy plays a vital role in helping patients and healthcare providers understand what results mean and how they can inform medical care and life decisions. She is particularly valued for her ability to translate complex genomic information into clear, practical guidance that patients can understand and act upon.

Leadership, education, and advancing the field

Beyond her clinical work, Sondy is deeply committed to shaping the future of genetic medicine. She has served on the Board of Certification for Genetic Counsellors, contributing to the professional standards and development of the genetics workforce. She is also actively involved in training the next generation of clinical geneticists, regularly supervising junior doctors undertaking specialist genetics training.

In addition, Sondy co-coordinates the postgraduate genomics course GENMED5001 at the University of Sydney. Through this role, she helps equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to integrate genomics into clinical practice, ensuring that patients across Australia can benefit from advances in genetic medicine.

Her role at Rosalind Genetics

While Sondy continues her important public hospital role at Royal North Shore Hospital, Rosalind Genetics is now the only private clinic where she consults. As Chief Medical Officer, she provides clinical leadership, ensures the highest standards of care, and guides the development of innovative genetic services.

Her presence at Rosalind Genetics reflects our commitment to excellence, integrity, and patient-centred care. Sondy’s experience, insight, and dedication ensure that every patient receives expert, thoughtful, and personalised guidance.

We are honoured to have Dr Sondhya Ghedia as part of the Rosalind Genetics team, helping individuals and families navigate genetic information with clarity, confidence, and compassion.
